Mission Trip to Mississippi (5)

Destruction

It is amazing how much destruction is still there. We did not have much time to view areas other than where we worked but a few of us did get a few minutes to drive around and this is what we saw. Remember that this is almost one and half years after the hurricane!

This is a building we saw in Biloxi down by the water. Mangled steel and as far as we can tell, nothing has been done on it.

This house was one that the first group who came down in October of 2005 worked on. It still has the tarp on the roof and is totally open to the elements. We saw so many homes that were still in this shape and so many empty lots where homes had stood.

Another partial building. This one they have started working on but have a long way to go. We saw piles of bricks and concrete blocks, sitting where houses used to stand. We saw a concrete slab which still had furniture on it - chairs and tables. Unbelievable!

Look closely at this building. The white line going across the building just below the eaves is where the water line hit.

Another building that has windows out and no work done on it.

There were still many piles of garbage sitting out in front of houses - which means they are still cleaning out houses and removing items that were destroyed in the hurricane.

At the gulf - something that used to be here is now in pieces.

While driving around you can see the FEMA trailers that people are still living in, the piles of concrete laying around.

An empty foundation with remains sitting on it and in the background some rebuilding getting started.
